Three of the biggest dangers facing motorcylists

On Behalf of | May 27, 2021 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Studies show that motorcycle riders are 28 times more likely to die in a crash than people in passenger vehicles. One way to reduce the number of motorcycle crashes and to save lives is to raise awareness about the dangers motorcyclists face. Here are three of the most dangerous situations motorcyclists encounter on roads in Kentucky and throughout the U.S.

Inattentive drivers

Whether they are turning left into the path of a motorcycle or changing lanes without checking their blindspots, inattentive drivers are a constant source of concern for motorcyclists. While you can’t control who you share the road with, you can increase your own safety by mastering defensive driving techniques.

Poor road conditions

Gravel, potholes, cracks—such hazards are of little concern to drivers of cars and trucks but pose serious risks to motorcyclists. Road design is also an important factor. Hazards such as poor lighting, poorly designed intersections and inadequate shoulders are especially dangerous to motorcyclists.

If possible, stay on roads you know are safe and well maintained. When travelling, study maps, state DoT websites and other materials to gain all the information you can before hitting the road.

Bad weather

Heavy rain makes driving a motorcycle difficult and dangerous, especially when surrounding traffic does not adjust its speed to match the weather. Snow and ice are even more difficult to maneuver in. Whenever possible, avoid driving in inclement conditions, and check the weather forecast before every trip. One way to reduce the dangers of bad weather is to make sure your tires, brakes, belts, mirrors and other components are always in optimal condition before you hit the road.

For motorcyclists, there are many dangers on the road. If you have been injured by a careless driver or other at-fault party, you face legal and financial challenges off the road as well. An experienced motorcycle accident attorney can help you navigate these challenges while protecting your right to fair compensation.
